New Host

This week I got an email from my web host that they were unable to bill my renewal on my hosting. This came as a bit of a surprise to me, as I had never gotten any notification about it before this. At least in the past, everywhere I have used for sites, and for the domain registration of this site, they send an advance warning before they bill, even if you have it set to auto-renew. And I actually did not recall setting this to auto-renew, but I had a 2 year hosting plan so that was a while back. I knew my hosting was coming due soon, but was not aware they would charge me without warning 15 days early. In retrospect I probably should have known, it was buried in their terms apparently. I don’t remember reading that at the time, but I’ll assume it was.

Anyway, the amount they tried to charge was massive. I was shocked. It was over 6 times the price I had paid before! The price was a little ridiculous to me. Plus, because I had initially signed a 2 year agreement, the renewal was for another 2 years. It was beyond unacceptable to me. If I had a huge amount of traffic and needed a lot of bandwidth or something I could see paying the amount they wanted, but this is not that kind of site.

Because of this, I changed hosting from iPage to a new host. I spent all day yesterday migrating my site from one host to the other. It was made more difficult by the fact that a lot of my theme and side content area did not transfer over correctly and I had to go in and manually reconfigure everything to what I have. I considered a redesign, I’ve been thinking about it anyway, but I just don’t want to take the time away from writing right now. It took a while, and I had to change around my contact page a bit, but I think I have everything switched to about the same as I had before. If you find anything wonky or not working, please contact me and let me know so I can fix it.

I just wanted to put this out there to vent my frustration over everything. Also, if you have a site somewhere check your renewal settings and see what they are going to automatically charge you. In my case I got lucky and they were not able to actually process the charge (canceled that credit card shortly after signing up with it), but if I hadn’t it would have been very expensive. And if you are thinking of signing up for hosting somewhere, make sure you check their policies on renewals. It can be very expensive if you don’t.
